چکیده

For three years we have used synthetic and field data to investigate the effectiveness of commercial refraction tomography codes on both simple and complex subsurface velocity structures, with the ultimate goal of determining the suitability of the method for karst problems. The results of these studies indicate that refraction tomography is able to resolve karst features under some conditions. The analysis of field data acquired on the Oak Ridge Reservation, TN shows low velocity zones on three parallel seismic lines. These zones are located at similar depths and fall on a line that is parallel to geologic strike, leading to an interpretation of a possible karst conduit. This feature has velocities of about 1500-2000 m/s in a matrix of 30004000 m/s, reasonable velocities for a mud filled void in saprolite at these depths. Drilling of this feature is anticipated in the near future. Analysis of a seismic line taken over the known mud-filled cavity shows a low velocity feature with a location consistent with drilling results. The velocity of the feature is about 1000 m/s, a value that is a little lower than that found for the features discussed above. Synthetic modeling sometimes generates results similar to the field results, but often fails to image cavities as well, or at all. Ongoing investigations are aimed at refining our understanding of the circumstances where these methods can be successful, and investigating the relevance of model results to actual field conditions.

Location of Sinkhole Extension by Seismic Refraction Tomography and GPR Methods

In 2008 a stream flow created a sinkhole near Park City, Utah, creating an irregular-shaped depression in the alluvium about 22 m long, 10 m wide and 6 m deep. The entire discharge of a nearby creek flowed into the sinkhole increasing the size of the sinkhole. A total of 10 GPR and 4 seismic refraction profiles were conducted to find lateral and vertical extensions of this sinkhole. Interpretat...

Near-surface evaluation of Ball Mountain Dam, Vermont, using multi-channel analysis of surface waves (MASW) and refraction tomography seismic methods on land-streamer data

A limited seismic investigation of Ball Mountain Dam, an earthen dam near Jamaica, Vermont, was conducted using multiple seismic methods including multi-channel analysis of surface waves (MASW), refraction tomography, and vertical seismic profiling (VSP). The refraction and MASW data were efficiently collected in one survey using a towed land streamer containing vertical-displacement geophones ...

Relationship between head wave amplitudes and seismic refraction velocities to detect lateral variation in the refractor

Refractor ambiguities are big problem in seismic refraction method especially in seismic engineering. There can be hidden subsurface geological phenomena such as hidden faults and shear zones which are not simply predicted by the travel-time graph or some geophysical methods. Head wave amplitudes are used to show the resolution of refractor ambiguities and the existence of anisotropy in complex...

HIGH RESOLUTION SEISMIc REFRAcTION TOMOGRAPHY FOR DETERMINING DEPTH OF BLAST INDUcED DAMAGE IN A MINE WALL

High resolution seismic refraction tomography has proved to be a useful tool to effectively estimate depth of blast induced damage in a mine face. Excavation blast damage can be as shallow as 1 to 2m and requires resolution at a fraction of a meter for effective imaging. We used an accelerometer with flat frequency response to 1000Hz to record data at spacings of approximately 0.25 to 0.5m alon...

Seismic Tomography

The inversion of seismic travel-time data for radially varying media was initially investigated by Herglotz, Wiechert, and Bateman (the HWB method) in the early part of the 20th century [1]. Tomographic inversions for laterally varying media began in seismology starting in the 1970's. This included early work by Aki, Christoffersson, and Husebye who developed an inversion technique for estimati...
